Understanding Behaviors

When behavior is challenging, the focus needs to be on understanding why it is occurring, what the person is trying to communicate or what function the behavior has.

It can be very frustrating for an individual who struggles with neurodivergence to express themselves in a society tailored predominately to neurotypical needs and likes. The more we educate ourselves on a participant’s diagnosis, past environment and functional capacity, the clearer it will be for us to understand how best to support them.

A few great methods of providing support can be:

  • Using a recovery oriented approach

  • Exploring their strengths

  • Trying to empower the person and share decision making

  • Checking in to ensure your understanding of things is right

  • Exploring if there is anything practical you can do to assist.

What is it

Behavior is a response made towards Internal thoughts and feelings as well as the External environment and people surrounding an individual. Behavior’s are a direct form of communication which can take place through body language, facial expressions and even silence. The function of Behaviors is to assist in meeting needs, gaining sensations, accessing an item or engagement and displaying a dislike/discomfort.

How is it managed

Behaviors are managed as per their complexities and every individuals unique characteristics. This is why every individual has a set of reports and assessments which clearly outline strategies and protocols in place for the management of both positive and negative behaviors.

To carry out this support, clinicians work closely with carers who assist individuals on a daily basis. Data tracking is also used to analyze this support as Behaviors are always evolving and changing just like our individuals.
